New Edition wins Golden Note Award
A capacity crowd converged on the Beverly Hilton Hotel Monday evening in Los Angeles for the 21st annual ASCAP Rhythm and Soul Music Awards.
The awards honor the top songwriters and publishers of the previous year. The performance-heavy event is hosted by Grammy-winning songwriter/artist Johnta Austin, who is expected to be flanked by guest presenters including MC Lyte, Ne-Yo, The Dream, Flo-Rida and J. Holiday. Awards are to be handed out in 10 categories ranging from ringtone of the year to top gospel song.
This year's winners of the ASCAP Golden Note Award are New Edition, iconic performers in rhythm and soul. Making their debut in 1983 with the album "Candy Girl," tonight's award is in recognition of their innovative and enduring contributions to the genre, and brings them full circle in appreciation after 25 years of musicianship.
Expected to pick up their individual awards are all six members of the group: Ralph Tresvant, Bobby Brown, Ricky Bell, Ronnie DeVoe, Michael Bivins and Johnny Gill. Writer/producer Maurice Starr, former manager of the group, and ASCAP CEO John LoFrumento will present the awards to New Edition after a special video tribute.
